A. Introduction to
Cornell University ILR Upstate Labor Relations Initiative – Rocco Scanza,
Director of ADR Services, Cornell Institute on Conflict Resolution.
B. “What’s Up with
That?” Getting Into the Head of the Arbitrator and the Advocate.
Advocates: Have
you ever been mystified by what an arbitrator has done at the hearing or
in an award?
Arbitrators: Have
you ever wondered why the advocates have acted so strangely?
A panel consisting of
two arbitrators – Douglas Bantle and Dennis Campagna; two
labor advocates – Catherine Creighton and Jerry Gambino; and
two management advocates – James Schmit and Kathleen O'Hara
– will reveal how and why they do things and how they think an arbitrator
or an advocate can make a case and a hearing proceed well. Advocates will
have the chance to tell arbitrators what is most helpful and what is most
destructive for an arbitrator to do; arbitrators will have the chance to
tell advocates what helps an arbitrator most and what really destroys an
advocate’s case. All panel members will let the audience and the other
panel members get into their heads so that they can better understand the
arbitration process.
Attendees will have the
chance to submit questions in advance so that the panel can include some
of the issues in their presentations In addition, there will be a
question and answer session at the meeting. Please join us for this
informative session.
